19 Nutrition essentials for healthy skin

Sorry that this is a very dry blog post! However, keeping your skin in good condition is hard work and there are some nutritionals that are essential for doing so. This post lists them:

  1. Monounsaturated fatty acids may play a role in keeping us young.

  2. Antioxidant polyphenols could counteract damaging free radicals and reduce the risk of developing skin cancers.

  3. Antioxidant lycopene improves skin’s natural SPF - DOES NOT replace sunscreen!

  4. Cocoa flavanols, plant compounds with antioxidant properties, help hydrateskin and improve circulation.

  5. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly the type of omega-3 called DHA, have anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is one of the causes of acne.

  6. Omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid. Deficiency in this fat can result in eczema, which is associated with dry, scaly skin.

  7. Green tea polyphenols keep skin elastic and smooth.

  8. Catechins like EGCG (antioxidants) boost blood flow and oxygen to theskin, which delivers key nutrients to keep your complexion healthy.

  9. Lutein and zeaxanthin are nutrients that absorb and neutralise the free radicals created by UV light.

  10. Beta-carotene converts into vitamin A, which is essential for the growth ofskin cells and is required for skin firming.

  11. Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis, which keeps skin taught and smoothes fine lines. Vitamin C is also associated with reduced skindryness and less noticeable wrinkles.

  12. Limonene offers UV-protective benefits and helps to reduce the risk of developing skin cancers.

  13. Protein - the building block of collagen and elastin tissue, which keeps skintaut and less wrinkled.

  14. Water - to keep your skin hydrated.

  15. Isoflavone can help stop collagen from breaking down, which is what leads to sagging and lines.

  16. Zinc is required growth and function of skin cells. There is evidence to suggest that acne sufferers have low zinc levels.

  17. Resveratrol is an antioxidant which reduces the risk of developing skin cancers.

  18. Vitamin E is thought to enhance immune function, allowing the body to fight off inflammation that leads to acne.

  19. Vitamin B12 is essential for even skin tone. Symptoms of B12 deficiency are hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and vitiligo (white spots).
