Coaching vs Mentorship

One of the things I mentioned in last weeks staying focused email was to find a mentor.

Many people think that coaching and mentorship are the same thing,

but they're not.

There are some very clear differences.

Both Coaches and Mentors can help you accelerate your business.

But, if they're different

how do you know which you need.

Mentorship

  1. Mentors are normally people within an organisation, or people who have experience within a particular industry, who pass on their knowledge and skills to someone less experienced.

  2. Usually informal.

  3. Usually led by the mentee when issues arise.

  4. Meetings agenda is set by the mentee, to discuss issues they want to discuss.

  5. Long-term relationship.

  6. Broader view of the mentee.

  7. Focuses on personal and career development.

Coaching

  1. Coaches don't necessarily have experience in your field of work.

  2. Formal and structured process.

  3. Agenda set to focus on specific goals of the process.

  4. Meetings set on an agreed, regular frequency.

  5. Short-term relationship.

  6. Focused on specific development areas.

  7. Time-bound.

The biggest difference between mentorship and coaching is the focus and formality of the process.

Both processes can help you stay focused on your purpose, direction and goals.

Whichever you decide you need (or you might decide you need both!),

you'll be sure to get tonnes of value

and acceleration in your business.
